The End of CentOS7 Linux And What It Means For You

What is CentOS Linux?

CentOS Linux was a sturdy foundation for many servers worldwide, underpinning countless websites, applications, and digital systems. Developed, distributed, and maintained by a dedicated community, CentOS Linux was modeled after Red Hat® Enterprise Linux®’s blueprint.

The Sunset of CentOS Linux

In the realm of technology, evolution is inevitable. 2020 saw a pivotal shift in CentOS’s journey. With Red Hat’s collaboration, The CentOS Project announced its total commitment to CentOS Stream. Consequently, CentOS Linux 7 is slated for its end of life in mid-2024.

So, what does this shift signify? CentOS 7 will no longer receive updates or security patches after this date. This cessation is not just symbolic but poses tangible risks. In a rapidly changing digital ecosystem, outdated software can expose websites to many vulnerabilities.

The Ripple Effect: Legacy PHP Versions

The end of CentOS 7 has a cascading impact, especially concerning older versions of PHP. As CentOS 7 retires, specific PHP versions will no longer be available in our hosting environment. This change primarily affects legacy websites operating on outdated PHP versions, potentially causing performance issues and security vulnerabilities.

At Loud Canvas Media, our unwavering focus is your website’s security and performance. As we transition towards 2024, legacy sites needing help to embrace more contemporary PHP versions may encounter challenges in receiving support from our end.

Our Proactive Plan

Hosted with us? You can rest assured we are already in motion!

Navigating these transitions, especially for non-tech-savvy users, can seem daunting. But fear not, we’ve got your back. Our team is already in action mode, crafting solutions and exploring alternatives to ensure a seamless experience for your site.

If you are currently hosting with us, we’ve already put in an action plan to have a Senior Developer review each site in detail that runs on a legacy PHP version and make updates if possible. Otherwise, we’ll reach out before October 30th with recommendations and next steps!

Paving the Way Forward

If you aren’t on our hosting or own a legacy site running an older PHP version or the impending EOL of CentOS 7 raises concerns, we’re your go-to partner. With every challenge, there is an opportunity to improve oneself, and in this case, your website may look better than ever!

Together, let’s chart out a roadmap—through software upgrades, a rebuild, or considering a comprehensive hosting shift to us. We’d love to work with you.
